About The Project

Welcome to The Cousin Club Receipts Project!

Cousin Club

My name is Maddy Gassmann and I am the great-great-granddaughter of George and Elizabeth Weber (exact lineage: Gertrude>Henry>Zean). Who are the Webers? Well, if you're part of the Cousin Club, you know exactly who they are (if you don't know, I'm concerned). If you are not part of the Cousin Club, they were a couple of German immigrants who came to America and had a ton of kids who had a ton more kids who had a reasonable amount of kids. Catholics, amiright?

What is important about all those kids and their kids and their kid's kids is that we started a big ole' club. In 1980, the first Cousin Club was hosted. A giant gathering of cousins from far and wide. We come together, we eat, we play volleyball, and we take a giant photo of all of us in our color-coded T-Shirts.

The Receipts

At the inaugural 1980 Cousin Club, the first receipt book was published. It is a cookbook with entries submitted from cousins far and wide. With dozens of authors, these recipes range from amazing, to incomprehensible, to not fit for consumption by human beings (see Broccoli-Dog Food Casserole).

In each cousin club since then, recipes have been added and the book was re-published for attendees. Many cousins who have submitted recipes have since passed on but their delicious food will live on.

The Project

Now, beginning in 2020, I plan on cooking every single entry (with the exception of the Cousin Club Barbecue with would effectually clear out my savings - 40,000lb of meat? Really??). Inspired by the movie Julie/Julia and a newfound obsession with cooking shows, I have decided to embark on this journey of 325 recipes in 2 years.

Why 2 years? Simply because I wish to retain my girlish figure. If I am going to make 325 recipes, someone is going to have to eat them. While most of the time I can pawn off my goods on my co-workers, roommates, and climbing gym pals, I have to face the unfortunate fact that taste testing is not calorie-free.

Thank you for joining me on this journey!
